The Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks will meet for the first and only time this season in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This is the penultimate day of the regular season, and although all 16 playoff berths have been filled neither the Clippers nor Knicks are locked into their postseason positions as of yet.

The Clippers’ loss to the Atlanta Hawks last night put them out of contention for their first division title in franchise history. Los Angeles, however, still has an opportunity to clinch one of the top four seeds and home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs with a win tonight. The Clippers are tied with the Memphis Grizzlies for the fourth and fifth spots in the West. But by virtue of the tiebreaker, Los Angeles would earn the fourth seed should the teams finish the season with the same record. A loss to the Knicks tonight coupled with a Memphis victory over the Orlando Magic tomorrow night is the only way that the Clippers can lose the number four seed.

New York can finish sixth, seventh or eighth in the East. They are currently tied with the Philadelphia 76ers for the seventh and eight spots and own the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Knicks can lock up the seventh seed by simply winning their final two games of the season. If New York loses one of its final games and the 76ers defeat the Milwaukee Bucks tonight and the Detroit Pistons tomorrow, the Knicks will drop down to the eighth seed. To move up to the sixth spot, New York has to win its final two games and have the Orlando Magic fall to the Charlotte Bobcats tonight and the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow. The Knicks control their own destiny regarding seeds seven and eight but they will need some help to make it to six. All 16 playoff teams are determined but the positions of most of those teams will be worked out over the next two days.
