The Los Angeles Clippers will try to force a seventh and deciding game when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day. After winning the first two games at home, the Clippers have dropped three straight and need to get a road win tonight if they want to keep their postseason alive and force the series back to Los Angeles for a Game 7.

The Clippers, who averaged 101.1 points per game during the regular season and scored 112 in Game 1 of this series, were limited to 82 and 83 points in Games 3 and 4, respectively, in Memphis. In order to force a Game 7 in Los Angeles, the Clippers will have to find a way to score more points in Memphis. Tonight, in this critical Game 6, the Clippers will have to score a minimum of 90 points to give themselves any chance at extending this series. And to be honest, a 90-point effort by Los Angeles probably won’t be enough to stave off elimination.

The Grizzlies have scored 91 points or more in each of the first five games of this series and have eclipsed the century mark in the last two. However, defense has been Memphis’ calling card all season long. And if the Grizzlies are to advance to the second round, it will be that defense that will carry them home.

Each of the first four games of the best-of-seven series between the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers has been decided by double digits. The venue of the game has played a significant role in how these two teams have played. Each team has protected its home court. In the two games in Indiana, the Pacers averaged an impressive 110 points per game while outscoring the Hawks by an average of 16 points a game. However, when the series shifted to Atlanta, Indiana’s offense disappeared and the Pacers scored a total of 160 points and lost Games 3 and 4 by an average of 16 points. In today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day, Indiana will try to get their offense back on track and take a 3-2 series lead.

After falling behind 2-0 in the series, the Hawks returned home and got even with Indiana by defeating the Pacers in Atlanta for the 12th and 13th consecutive times. Including the first two games of this series, the Hawks have dropped their last four trips to Indiana’s Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Atlanta, who has lost seven straight road games during the postseason, has not won a road game during the playoffs since defeating the Chicago Bulls, 103-95, in the first game of a second-round series back on May 2, 2011.

Indiana averaged 110 points in the first two games of this series by scoring an extremely efficient 117.8 points per 100 possessions in those games. Unfortunately for the Pacers, that offensive efficiency did not follow them on the road. After averaging just 80 points a game in Games 3 and 4, Indiana’s offensive efficiency has dropped to 100.3 points per 100 possessions, 2.1 points fewer than the 102.4 points per 100 possessions that the Hawks are scoring in this series.

During the regular season, the Pacers, who allowed just 96.6 points per 100 possessions, had the NBA’s most efficient defense. Indiana also held opponents to 90.7 points per game during the regular season for second best in the league. So far during the playoffs, Indiana’s defense, which has allowed the Hawks to average 95 points a game and has given up 90 or more points in all four games, has been less than stellar. If the Pacers want to win Game 5 and take a 3-2 lead in this series, they will have to either play better defense or duplicate the offensive efficiency that they displayed in Games 1 and 2. Actually, it would probably be best if they do both.

After manhandling the Atlanta Hawks in the first two games of their best-of-seven series, the Indiana Pacers were given a dose of their own medicine when the series shifted to Atlanta for Game 3. The Hawks, who have now won 12 straight over the Pacers at Philips Arena, will have an opportunity to extend that streak to 13 and—more importantly—climb into a 2-2 tie with Indiana with a victory in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day.

The Pacers, who won the first two games by an average of 16 points while averaging 110 themselves, scored just 69 points while suffering a 21-point blowout in Game 3. After opening the series with eight solid quarters of offensive efficiency, Indiana’s offense was simply a no-show for Game 3. The Pacers shot a woeful 27 percent (22 of 81) from the floor, 16 percent (4 of 25) beyond the three-point arc and turned the ball over a whopping 22 times. Indiana will have to improve upon those numbers if the Pacers hope to head back home with a 3-1 series lead.

Atlanta hopes that the changes it made to its lineup—inserting 7-footer Johan Petro at center and bringing three-point specialist Kyle Korver off the bench—that allowed the Hawks to move Al Horford to power forward and Josh Smith to small forward to better matchup with Indiana’s size will be available to them for Game 4. Petro, whose wife is having a baby missed practice yesterday and skipped this morning’s shootaround, will be a game-time decision according to the Hawks’ official Twitter feed. Atlanta’s bigger lineup helped the Hawks outscore the Pacers by 20 points, 50-30, in the paint in Saturday night’s Game 3. If Atlanta can control the paint and force Indiana to turn the ball over at a high rate, the Hawks would give themselves a great chance at tying the series at two games apiece.

After getting manhandled in the first two games of their best-of-seven series with the Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks hope that a change of venue will help them earn their first playoff victory of this postseason. The Hawks, who trail the Pacers 2-0 in their first-round series, have lost the first two games by an average of 16 points. Atlanta needs to win today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day to avoid falling into 3-0 hole.

Luckily, for the Hawks, they have experienced some success against the Pacers in Atlanta’s Philips Arena. Atlanta has won 11 consecutive home games against Indiana. The Hawks can keep their hopes in this series alive by extending that streak to an even dozen games. Atlanta has taken an early lead in each of the first two games only to give them up for good by the two-minute mark of the first quarter. The Hawks hope that a little home cooking will give them the energy to have a lead at the end—as opposed to the beginning—of the game.

Indiana, who has not won in Atlanta since a 100-90 victory back on December 22, 2006, can take a stranglehold on this series with a victory tonight. After averaging a mundane 94.7 points per game during the regular season, the Pacers are averaging 110 points against the Hawks in this series. If Indiana, who is scoring an NBA-high 117.8 points per 100 possessions during the playoffs, can take that type of offensive efficiency on the road, the Pacers will find themselves with a 3-0 series lead by the end of the night.

In the words of their head coach Larry Drew, the Atlanta Hawks were “physically manhandled” in Game 1 of their first-round series with the Indiana Pacers. How the Hawks respond to Indiana’s physicality and the constructive criticism of their coach will largely determine what will happen in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day.

The Pacers hit first and often in Sunday’s Game 1 matchup. Indiana won the battle of the boards (48-32) and was more aggressive attacking the paint. Indiana’s aggression helped the Pacers earn 20 more free throws than the Hawks. Indiana converted on 30 of its 34 attempts from the charity stripe and made 23 more free throws than Atlanta. All of this led to a 107-90 Game 1 victory for the Pacers.

Atlanta will have to meet force with force in Game 2 if the Hawks hope to leave Indiana with a highly-coveted 1-1 split. According to their coach, the Hawks need to bring “more physicality to the game.” However, in my opinion, more physicality alone will not help Atlanta snap a three-game losing streak to the Pacers. The Hawks need more physicality, more intensity, more energy and—perhaps most importantly—better execution if they want Game 2 to be a more competitive contest than Sunday’s Game 1 was.
