The Los Angeles Clippers will try to force a seventh and deciding game when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day. After winning the first two games at home, the Clippers have dropped three straight and need to get a road win tonight if they want to keep their postseason alive and force the series back to Los Angeles for a Game 7.

The Clippers, who averaged 101.1 points per game during the regular season and scored 112 in Game 1 of this series, were limited to 82 and 83 points in Games 3 and 4, respectively, in Memphis. In order to force a Game 7 in Los Angeles, the Clippers will have to find a way to score more points in Memphis. Tonight, in this critical Game 6, the Clippers will have to score a minimum of 90 points to give themselves any chance at extending this series. And to be honest, a 90-point effort by Los Angeles probably won’t be enough to stave off elimination.

The Grizzlies have scored 91 points or more in each of the first five games of this series and have eclipsed the century mark in the last two. However, defense has been Memphis’ calling card all season long. And if the Grizzlies are to advance to the second round, it will be that defense that will carry them home.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Atlanta Hawks at Indiana Pacers

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

8:00 PM Atlanta Hawks Indiana Pacers Pacers
9:30 PM Houston Rockets Oklahoma City Thunder Thunder

Each of the first four games of the best-of-seven series between the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers has been decided by double digits. The venue of the game has played a significant role in how these two teams have played. Each team has protected its home court. In the two games in Indiana, the Pacers averaged an impressive 110 points per game while outscoring the Hawks by an average of 16 points a game. However, when the series shifted to Atlanta, Indiana’s offense disappeared and the Pacers scored a total of 160 points and lost Games 3 and 4 by an average of 16 points. In today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day, Indiana will try to get their offense back on track and take a 3-2 series lead.

After falling behind 2-0 in the series, the Hawks returned home and got even with Indiana by defeating the Pacers in Atlanta for the 12th and 13th consecutive times. Including the first two games of this series, the Hawks have dropped their last four trips to Indiana’s Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Atlanta, who has lost seven straight road games during the postseason, has not won a road game during the playoffs since defeating the Chicago Bulls, 103-95, in the first game of a second-round series back on May 2, 2011.

Indiana averaged 110 points in the first two games of this series by scoring an extremely efficient 117.8 points per 100 possessions in those games. Unfortunately for the Pacers, that offensive efficiency did not follow them on the road. After averaging just 80 points a game in Games 3 and 4, Indiana’s offensive efficiency has dropped to 100.3 points per 100 possessions, 2.1 points fewer than the 102.4 points per 100 possessions that the Hawks are scoring in this series.

During the regular season, the Pacers, who allowed just 96.6 points per 100 possessions, had the NBA’s most efficient defense. Indiana also held opponents to 90.7 points per game during the regular season for second best in the league. So far during the playoffs, Indiana’s defense, which has allowed the Hawks to average 95 points a game and has given up 90 or more points in all four games, has been less than stellar. If the Pacers want to win Game 5 and take a 3-2 lead in this series, they will have to either play better defense or duplicate the offensive efficiency that they displayed in Games 1 and 2. Actually, it would probably be best if they do both.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Miami Heat at Milwaukee Bucks

3:30 PM Miami Heat Milwaukee Bucks Heat
7:00 PM San Antonio Spurs Los Angeles Lakers Spurs

Before the 2013 NBA Playoffs began, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks predicted that his team would defeat the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat in six games. He also stated that there would be more pressure on the Heat than there would be on the Bucks. Now, with Miami leading the series 3-0, all of the pressure is on Milwaukee. Today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day is simply a win-or-go-home scenario for the Bucks.

Milwaukee has lost the first three games of the series by an average of 16 points and all three of them were double-digit losses. Although five Bucks are averaging double-figure scoring for the series (with Jennings scoring a team-high 16.7 points per game), Milwaukee has not gotten consistent production from any of its players. No Bucks player has scored 10 or more points in all three games.

The Heat will have an opportunity to sweep a playoff opponent for the first time since Chris Bosh and LeBron James joined Dwyane Wade in Miami two seasons ago. Miami held 3-0 leads in the first round of the playoffs each of the past two seasons and lost Game 4 each time. Wade, who will be a game-time decision, may or may not be in the lineup when the Heat go for their first four-game playoff sweep since sweeping the Washington Wizards in the second round of the 2005 playoffs.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: New York Knicks at Boston Celtics

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Eleven days after the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon, the Boston Celtics will try to help a wounded city heal when they return to the TD Garden for their first home game since that fateful day. The Celtics will also be trying to get a much-needed win in their best-of-seven series with the New York Knicks. Boston trails New York two games to zip in their first-round playoff series. A Celtics win in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day would bring the city of Boston a little joy amidst the pain. It would also keep Boston from falling into—what has historically proven to be—an insurmountable 3-0 hole in the series.

Including the first two games of this series, the Celtics have dropped five straight to the Knicks. Boston has to figure out a way to score the ball and avoid offensive droughts to keep its chances of making a comeback in this series alive. During their five-game losing streak to New York, the Celtics have averaged an abysmal 81.8 points per game and have fallen short of the 90-point mark all five times. Although Carmelo Anthony is averaging 35 points a game so far in this series, Boston has done a great job of limiting a Knicks team that averaged 100 points a game during the regular season to a more pedestrian 86 points a game over the first two games of this series. As usual, defense has not been Boston’s problem. However, until the Celtics find some offensive cohesion, they will be hard pressed to find any meaningful success against the Knicks.

New York, who has a 2-0 lead in a playoff series for the first time since sweeping the Toronto Raptors 3-0 in the first-round of the 2000 NBA Playoffs, is trying to advance past the first round for the first time since making it to the Eastern Conference finals that same season. Since no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in NBA history, the Knicks could take a major step towards ending that 13-year series-win drought with a victory tonight. However, if New York loses, the Knicks just might find themselves in a tough battle with a proud, tough, veteran-laden, battle-tested Celtics team that will not just simply roll over and die.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Golden State Warriors at Denver Nuggets

It will be interesting to see how the Golden State Nuggets adjust to the loss of power forward David Lee in Game 2 of their first-round series with the Denver Nuggets. Will Coach Mark Jackson try to get more out of center Andrew Bogut, who was a team-high plus-10 when he was on the floor in Saturday night’s Game 1? Or will the backcourt trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack be asked to carry even more of the load? Maybe Jackson will take a look at veteran forwards Andris Biedrins and Richard Jefferson (who both recorded DNPs in Game 1) to see if either of them can possibly make an impact on Game 2. Who knows what Jackson may do and, honestly, it will likely depend on the flow of the game. The Warriors will most likely start Carl Landry in Lee’s place and Landry will probably log more than 30 minutes in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day.

Lee, who tore his right hip flexor in the fourth quarter of Game 1, will miss the rest of the playoffs. During the regular season, Golden State was 1-2 in the three games that Lee missed. Landry started in two of those games (a road win over the New Orleans Hornets and a home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks) and recorded a double-double in both.

Just as the Warriors lose their starting power forward for the year, Denver’s energetic Kenneth Faried is due to return to the Nuggets’ lineup after sitting out Game 1 with a sprained left ankle. Even without Faried’s energy, the Nuggets, who have lost just three games at the Pepsi Center all season long, still found a way to protect their home court in Game 1. Andre Miller, who scored a game-high 28 points, hit the first game-winning shot of his basketball career with 1.3 seconds remaining on the clock to give Denver a narrow 97-95 victory in Game 1. The Nuggets, who extended their home winning streak to 24 games with that victory, will try to continue their home dominance and take a 2-0 lead before the series shifts to Golden State.
