The Utah Jazz will try to hold on to the eighth—and final—Western Conference playoff spot when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Jazz and Thunder this season. The home team has won each of the three prior matchups and the Thunder lead the season series 2-1.

Utah is a half-game ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Lakers for the West’s final playoff spot. If the Jazz (41-37) want to ensure that they are still among the West’s top eight teams by the end of the evening, they need to win tonight’s game. If Utah loses to the Thunder and the Lakers get a home win over the New Orleans Hornets tonight, the Jazz would fall out of the top eight and would trail the Lakers by half a game.

Utah, who has won two straight against the Thunder at home, will try to keep an advantage over the Lakers by earning its 30th home win of the season and its eighth victory in its last nine outings

The Thunder, who trail the San Antonio Spurs for the West’s top spot by a single game, will try to close that gap to half a game with a victory tonight. Although Oklahoma City (56-21) would remain within striking distance of the Spurs with a win tonight, the Thunder (who trail the Spurs by a game in the loss column) would still need San Antonio to lose at least one of its five remaining games to have any chance at earning the West’s top playoff seed.

Oklahoma City, who has won 10 of its last 14 meetings with the Jazz, will try to keep some pressure on the Spurs by winning its season series with Utah for the fourth straight year.

NBA Game of the Day: Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers will try to clinch a division title for the first time in franchise history when they host the Los Angeles Lakers in today’s NBA Game of the Day. The Clippers have won the first three meetings between these Staples Center co-tenants by an average of 13 points. With a victory this afternoon, the Clippers can sweep the season series over the Lakers for the first time since winning all four games during the 1974-1975 season.

Prior to winning their 50th game of this season (in a 126-101 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday) the 49 wins that the Buffalo Braves put up during the 1974-1975 campaign was the most wins the Clippers franchise had ever won in a single season. With that milestone out of the way, the Clippers (50-26) now have an opportunity to clinch their first division title by getting a win over the team with the most division titles in league history.

The Lakers, who have won a total of 33 division titles and the last five Pacific Division titles, are playing for their playoff lives. The Lakers (40-36) have a scant half-game lead over the ninth-place Utah Jazz for the Western Conference’s eighth—and final—playoff spot. If they want to ensure that they are still among the top eight in the West when they wake up tomorrow morning, the Lakers need to beat the Clippers today. If the Lakers fall to the Clippers and the Jazz get a road win over the Golden State Warriors tonight, the Lakers would drop down to ninth, a half-game behind Utah for the West’s final playoff spot.

Since the Clippers’ magic number (any combination of Clippers wins and Warriors losses) for clinching the Pacific is one, the Clippers would claim their first division title with a win of their own or a Golden State loss to Utah.

The Los Angeles Lakers will try to hold on to the eighth—and final—Western Conference playoff spot when they host the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be third and final meeting between the Lakers and Grizzlies this season. Memphis, who won the two prior meetings at home, can sweep the season series from the Lakers for the first time since winning all three matchups during the 2004-2005 season with a victory tonight.

Los Angeles (39-36) leads the Utah Jazz by half a game for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot. The Lakers must avoid being swept by the Grizzlies if they want to ensure that they remain among the top eight teams in the West by the time the night is over. If the Lakers fall to Memphis and the Utah Jazz get a home win over the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles would drop down to ninth place in the West and would lose control of its playoff destiny. With a win tonight, the Lakers would remain at least one game ahead of the Jazz in the loss column and would thereby maintain complete control of their playoff destiny. If the Lakers can win out, they would earn their eighth straight playoff berth.

The Grizzlies, who have already locked up their third straight postseason appearance, are trying to stay in the hunt for the third spot in the Western Conference playoff seedings. Memphis (51-24) currently sits in fifth place in the West, one-half game behind the third-place Denver Nuggets. The Grizzlies and Nuggets both have 24 losses, but since Denver won the season series between the teams 3-1, the Nuggets own the tiebreaker and Memphis would need some help from Denver to move up to third.

However, although the Grizzlies are currently in fifth place behind the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis does have the better record and would have home-court advantage against the Clippers in a probable first-round playoff matchup. The Clippers have the fourth-place seeding by virtue of being a division leader. Memphis currently has a game-and-a-half advantage over the Clippers and that lead can be extended to two games or be slashed to a tenuous single game depending on the result of tonight’s game. If the Grizzlies lose tonight, they would be just one game better than the Clippers in the loss column, which Los Angeles would have an opportunity to possibly make up when the Clippers visit Memphis on April 13.

The Utah Jazz will try to maintain their hold on the Western Conference’s eighth—and final—playoff spot when they host the Denver Nuggets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Jazz and Nuggets this season. Each team has protected its home floor and Denver leads the season series 2-1.

The Jazz, who are deadlocked with the Los Angeles Lakers for that eighth seed, have won five straight and control their own playoff destiny by virtue of owning the tiebreaker with the Lakers. If Utah (39-36) can win out, there is absolutely nothing that Los Angeles can do to overtake the Jazz. However, if Utah loses tonight, the Jazz would fall a half-game behind the Lakers and would no longer have complete control of their playoff destiny. If they hope to maintain control of their destiny and keep ahold of their playoff position, the Jazz need to extend their winning streak to six tonight.

The Nuggets, who, by virtue of owning the tiebreaker with the Memphis Grizzlies, currently sit in third place in the West, need a victory tonight to ensure that they remain in that spot by evening’s end. If Denver (50-24) falls to the Jazz and the Grizzlies defeat the Portland Trail Blazers tonight then the Nuggets would drop to fifth place, a full game behind Memphis.

Denver, who has lost its last three trips to Salt Lake City, can win the season series with the Jazz for the first time since winning three of the four matchups during the 2009-2010 season with a victory tonight.

10:30 PM Indiana Pacers Los Angeles Clippers Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers will try to reach 50 wins in a season for the first time in franchise history when they host the Indiana Pacers in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the second and final meeting between these teams this season. The Clippers won the first game and can sweep the season series over the Pacers for the first time in eight years with a franchise-record-setting victory tonight.

The Clippers (49-25) have never had a 50-win season in the 43-year history of the franchise. If they defeat the Pacers tonight, the Clippers will earn the franchise’s first 50-win season and will also move one step closer to another franchise first.

Los Angeles, who has never won a division title, currently leads the Pacific by seven games over the second-place Golden State Warriors. With Golden State and Los Angeles both having eight games remaining—Los Angeles’ magic number (any combination of Clippers wins or Warriors losses) to clinch their first division title is two. The Clippers would cut that magical number to just one with a win tonight.

Indiana, who currently sits in third place in the East, can move a half-game ahead of the second-place New York Knicks with a victory tonight. A victory would also move the Pacers (47-27) another step closer to capturing their first Central Division title since 2004. Indiana has a six-game lead over the Chicago Bulls for the Central Division title. Since the Pacers already own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Bulls, Indiana’s magic number to clinch the Central is three.

The Pacers, who have won four straight, will try to close out a perfect 4-0 road trip for the first time this season with a victory over Los Angeles tonight. The Clippers, who are returning home after a disappointing 1-3 trip, will try to open their four-game homestand on a positive note by accomplishing a franchise first—and moving just one step away from accomplishing another.
