The seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs will be up for grabs when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Southwest Division rivals. Dallas won each of the first three games by double digits and can sweep the season series over the Grizzlies for the first time since winning all four meetings during the 2007-2008 season.

The Mavericks and Grizzlies come into the final night of the regular season with identical 49-32 records. Both teams will be seeking win 50 and both of them will be trying to avoid a first-round matchup with the overall top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. Dallas and Memphis were both swept by the Spurs and both would rather take their chances with the West’s second seed (which will be either the Los Angeles Clippers or Oklahoma City Thunder) than face San Antonio in the first round.

The winner of tonight’s matchup will have a 50-win season and avoid opening the playoffs in San Antonio. The loser will fall just short of the 50-win plateau and have to open the playoffs against a Spurs team that can finish the regular season with a single-season-franchise-tying 63 wins with a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

NBA Game of the Day: Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

The Dallas Mavericks (48-32) will try to clinch a playoff berth when they host the Phoenix Suns (47-32) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the third and final meeting between these teams this season. The teams split the first two games and Dallas can win the season series for the seventh straight season with a victory tonight.

The Mavericks currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference standings—half a game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns, who are eighth and ninth, respectively. If Dallas earns its 49th victory of the season tonight, the Mavericks would finish the season no worse than 49-33 and the Suns would finish no better than 49-33. And since a victory tonight would give Dallas the head-to-head tiebreaker over Phoenix, the Suns would be unable to bump the Mavericks out of the West’s top eight.

Even if Dallas, Memphis and Phoenix finish the season with identical 49-33 records—and the three-way tiebreaker (record against the other two teams) comes into play—Phoenix (who is currently 1-4 against the Mavericks and Grizzlies) would still be unable to displace Dallas (who is currently 4-1 against Memphis and Phoenix) from the top eight in the West.

The Mavericks, who have won 18 of their last 24 meetings with Phoenix, can put an end to a one-year playoff drought by running their record over the Suns to 19 -6 over the last 25.

While Dallas will be trying to secure a playoff berth, Phoenix will be simply trying to get back into the top eight where it can control its own destiny. However, in order for the Suns to move up the Western Conference standings they will have to get a victory in a place that has not been too kind to them over the past several years. Phoenix did win its last visit to the American Airlines Center back on April 10, 2013, 102-91. But prior to that victory, the Suns had dropped 10 straight games in Dallas.

If Phoenix, who currently sits in ninth place in the West because it doesn’t own the tiebreaker against the Grizzlies, with whom it shares identical 47-32 records with, can get a win in Dallas tonight, the Suns would move up to seventh in the Western Conference standings—half a game ahead of the eighth-place Grizzlies (who are idle tonight)—and push the Mavericks down to ninth (mere percentage points behind Memphis). More importantly, a victory tonight would put Phoenix one game ahead of both Dallas and Memphis in the loss column. And with that advantage, the Suns would have complete control of their playoff destiny.

NBA Game of the Day: Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat

The Indiana Pacers (54-25) will try to maintain the top spot in the East when they visit the Miami Heat (53-25) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final regular-season meeting between last season’s Eastern Conference finalists. The first three games have been decided by a total of 10 points. Indiana has won two of those three matchups and can win the season series for the second straight season with a victory tonight.

With a win, the Pacers, who are a mere half-game ahead of Miami for first-place in the Eastern Conference standings, can take a firm one and a half game lead over the Heat with less than a week left in the season. An Indiana victory would also place the Pacers a game ahead of Miami in the loss column and give them the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Heat should the two teams finish the season with identical records.

The Heat, who can move a half-game ahead of Indiana with a victory, really needs this win if they want to have a real chance at securing the top seed in the East for the second consecutive season. If Miami wins, the Heat would move a game ahead of Indiana in the loss column and could secure the East’s top seed by simply winning out. However, if the Heat fall to the Pacers tonight, the only way that Miami would be able to earn the top seed in the East would be if Indiana loses its two remaining games and the Heat win all three of their remaining contests.

Basically, if the Pacers win tonight’s game, Indiana will, in all likelihood, earn the top seed in the East and will have home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs—including a potential rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals—which was decided in Game 7 in Miami—against the Heat.

NBA Game of the Day: Charlotte Bobcats at Washington Wizards

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

The Charlotte Bobcats (39-38) will try to earn their season-best fifth consecutive victory and move up the Eastern Conference standings when they visit the Washington Wizards (40-37) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Southeast Division foes. Charlotte won two of the first three meetings and can win the season series, and the head-to-head tiebreaker that comes along with it, with a victory tonight.

The Bobcats, who currently sit in seventh place in the East—one game behind the sixth-place Wizards, have won their last four games by an average of 12.3 points. Charlotte’s current four-game winning streak started with a 100-94 home win over Washington on March 31. If the Bobcats can extend that streak to five games with another victory over the Wizards, Charlotte and Washington would have identical 40-38 records. But since the Bobcats would win the season series three games to one with a win tonight, Charlotte would move into sixth place ahead of Washington by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Wizards can tie the season series between the teams at two games apiece and practically lock up sixth place in the East with a victory tonight. If Washington wins, the Wizards would move two games ahead of the Bobcats with just four games remaining. And since a Wizards victory would put the division-record tiebreaker into play, Washington would essentially be three games ahead of Charlotte. The Wizards, who are 8-5 against divisional opponents, have already locked up that tiebreaker over the Bobcats, who are just 4-10 against the Southeast.

NBA Game of the Day: Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards

The Chicago Bulls (44-32) will go for a season-high tying fifth consecutive win when they visit the Washington Wizards (40-36) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the third and final regular-season meeting between these teams. Washington won the first two matchups and can sweep a season series over Chicago for the first time since the 1979-1980 season, when the then Washington Bullets won both games over the Bulls, who were then playing in the Western Conference’s now defunct Midwest Division.

Chicago, who is currently tied with the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors for third place in the East, can possibly move up the Eastern Conference standings with a victory over the Wizards tonight, and some help from the NBA-worst Milwaukee Bucks. The Bulls and Raptors have identical 44-32 records, but Chicago currently sits in fourth place in the East behind Toronto simply because the Raptors are a division leader and the Bulls are not. However, if Toronto falls to the Bucks and the Bulls defeat the Wizards, Chicago would move one game ahead of the Raptors and into third place in the East since the division-leader tiebreaker would no longer be in play.

The Wizards, who have secured their first playoff berth in six seasons, have won four of their last five games and hold the sixth spot in the East—a game and a half behind the fifth-place Brooklyn Nets and two games ahead of the seventh-place Charlotte Bobcats. All three teams are in action tonight and Washington can potentially move closer to fifth place or seventh placed depending upon what happens tonight. The Wizards could possibly move within half a game of the Nets with a victory over the Bulls coupled with a Brooklyn loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Washington could also find itself just one game ahead of Charlotte with a loss to Chicago and a Bobcats victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. If the Wizards, Nets and Bobcats all win—or lose—Washington will remain a game and a half behind Brooklyn and two games ahead of Charlotte.
