The seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs will be up for grabs when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Southwest Division rivals. Dallas won each of the first three games by double digits and can sweep the season series over the Grizzlies for the first time since winning all four meetings during the 2007-2008 season.

The Mavericks and Grizzlies come into the final night of the regular season with identical 49-32 records. Both teams will be seeking win 50 and both of them will be trying to avoid a first-round matchup with the overall top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. Dallas and Memphis were both swept by the Spurs and both would rather take their chances with the West’s second seed (which will be either the Los Angeles Clippers or Oklahoma City Thunder) than face San Antonio in the first round.

The winner of tonight’s matchup will have a 50-win season and avoid opening the playoffs in San Antonio. The loser will fall just short of the 50-win plateau and have to open the playoffs against a Spurs team that can finish the regular season with a single-season-franchise-tying 63 wins with a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

NBA Game of the Day: New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Time (ET) Visitor Home Prediction
8:00 PM New York Knicks Brooklyn Nets Nets
10:30 PM Denver Nuggets Los Angeles Clippers Clippers

The Brooklyn Nets (44-36) will try to lock up the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs when they host the New York Knicks (35-45) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Atlantic Division rivals. The Knicks won two of the first three matchups and can win the season series for the third time in four years with a victory tonight.

Brooklyn currently has a game and a half lead over the sixth-place Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference standings. The Nets can push that lead to an insurmountable two games—with just one game remaining—with a victory tonight. Brooklyn, who has won 17 of its last 18 home games, will be going for its 29th victory at the Barclays center in its home season finale.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention the night before, New York is coming off of an impressive 100-89 victory over the playoff-bound Chicago Bulls (who are still battling the Toronto Raptors for the Eastern Conference’s third seed) Sunday night. The Knicks are a solid 14-5 in their last 19 games—including an eight-game winning streak between March 5 and March 21. But even that hot streak could not help them overcome their abysmal 21-40 record through the first 61 games of the season.

New York’s last two victories have come against the Raptors and Bulls—one of which the Nets will face in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

NBA Game of the Day: Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Time (ET) Visitor Home Prediction
3:30 PM Sacramento Kings Los Angeles Clippers Clippers
7:00 PM Milwaukee Bucks Washington Wizards Bucks
7:00 PM Philadelphia 76ers Charlotte Bobcats Bobcats
7:30 PM Miami Heat Atlanta Hawks Heat
7:30 PM Boston Celtics Cleveland Cavaliers Cavaliers
8:00 PM New Orleans Pelicans Houston Rockets Rockets
8:30 PM Phoenix Suns Dallas Mavericks Mavericks
9:00 PM Utah Jazz Denver Nuggets Nuggets

The Dallas Mavericks (48-32) will try to clinch a playoff berth when they host the Phoenix Suns (47-32) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the third and final meeting between these teams this season. The teams split the first two games and Dallas can win the season series for the seventh straight season with a victory tonight.

The Mavericks currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference standings—half a game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns, who are eighth and ninth, respectively. If Dallas earns its 49th victory of the season tonight, the Mavericks would finish the season no worse than 49-33 and the Suns would finish no better than 49-33. And since a victory tonight would give Dallas the head-to-head tiebreaker over Phoenix, the Suns would be unable to bump the Mavericks out of the West’s top eight.

Even if Dallas, Memphis and Phoenix finish the season with identical 49-33 records—and the three-way tiebreaker (record against the other two teams) comes into play—Phoenix (who is currently 1-4 against the Mavericks and Grizzlies) would still be unable to displace Dallas (who is currently 4-1 against Memphis and Phoenix) from the top eight in the West.

The Mavericks, who have won 18 of their last 24 meetings with Phoenix, can put an end to a one-year playoff drought by running their record over the Suns to 19 -6 over the last 25.

While Dallas will be trying to secure a playoff berth, Phoenix will be simply trying to get back into the top eight where it can control its own destiny. However, in order for the Suns to move up the Western Conference standings they will have to get a victory in a place that has not been too kind to them over the past several years. Phoenix did win its last visit to the American Airlines Center back on April 10, 2013, 102-91. But prior to that victory, the Suns had dropped 10 straight games in Dallas.

If Phoenix, who currently sits in ninth place in the West because it doesn’t own the tiebreaker against the Grizzlies, with whom it shares identical 47-32 records with, can get a win in Dallas tonight, the Suns would move up to seventh in the Western Conference standings—half a game ahead of the eighth-place Grizzlies (who are idle tonight)—and push the Mavericks down to ninth (mere percentage points behind Memphis). More importantly, a victory tonight would put Phoenix one game ahead of both Dallas and Memphis in the loss column. And with that advantage, the Suns would have complete control of their playoff destiny.

NBA Game of the Day: San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Time (ET) Visitor Home Prediction
8:00 PM San Antonio Spurs Dallas Mavericks Spurs
10:30 PM Denver Nuggets Golden State Warriors Warriors

The Dallas Mavericks (48-31) will try to win a season-high tying fifth straight game when they host the league-best San Antonio Spurs (60-18) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final regular-season meeting between these teams. San Antonio has won the first three matchups by an average of 12.3 points per game and can sweep a season series over the Mavericks for the second straight time with a victory tonight.

Dallas currently sits in seventh-place in the West—one game behind the sixth-place Golden State Warriors and a half-game ahead of the eighth-place Phoenix Suns. The Mavericks, who are coming off of perfect 4-0 road trip—where they defeated their opponents by an average of 8.0 points per game—return home with an opportunity to match its longest winning streak of the season. To match that streak, Dallas will have to snap an eight-game losing streak to San Antonio.

The Spurs, who are 1-2 in their last three games, have dropped their last two road games by an average of 15.5 points. San Antonio has not dropped three consecutive road games all season long and can move one step closer to locking up the overall number one seed with a victory tonight. The Spurs have won the last eight matchups between these teams by an average of 15.5 points per game. San Antonio has not lost a game to the Mavericks since a 106-99 road loss in Dallas back on March 17, 2012.

The Mavericks can move into a virtual tie with Golden State for sixth place in the West with a victory over the Spurs combined with a Warriors loss to the Denver Nuggets in the night’s only other game.  But even in that scenario, Dallas would remain the seventh-place team—percentage points behind the Warriors.  However, a Dallas loss would drop the Mavericks down to eighth place—percentage points behind the Phoenix Suns and a single game ahead of the ninth-place Memphis Grizzlies.

NBA Game of the Day: Charlotte Bobcats at Washington Wizards

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

The Charlotte Bobcats (39-38) will try to earn their season-best fifth consecutive victory and move up the Eastern Conference standings when they visit the Washington Wizards (40-37) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Southeast Division foes. Charlotte won two of the first three meetings and can win the season series, and the head-to-head tiebreaker that comes along with it, with a victory tonight.

The Bobcats, who currently sit in seventh place in the East—one game behind the sixth-place Wizards, have won their last four games by an average of 12.3 points. Charlotte’s current four-game winning streak started with a 100-94 home win over Washington on March 31. If the Bobcats can extend that streak to five games with another victory over the Wizards, Charlotte and Washington would have identical 40-38 records. But since the Bobcats would win the season series three games to one with a win tonight, Charlotte would move into sixth place ahead of Washington by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Wizards can tie the season series between the teams at two games apiece and practically lock up sixth place in the East with a victory tonight. If Washington wins, the Wizards would move two games ahead of the Bobcats with just four games remaining. And since a Wizards victory would put the division-record tiebreaker into play, Washington would essentially be three games ahead of Charlotte. The Wizards, who are 8-5 against divisional opponents, have already locked up that tiebreaker over the Bobcats, who are just 4-10 against the Southeast.
