The Los Angeles Clippers will try to force a seventh and deciding game when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day. After winning the first two games at home, the Clippers have dropped three straight and need to get a road win tonight if they want to keep their postseason alive and force the series back to Los Angeles for a Game 7.

The Clippers, who averaged 101.1 points per game during the regular season and scored 112 in Game 1 of this series, were limited to 82 and 83 points in Games 3 and 4, respectively, in Memphis. In order to force a Game 7 in Los Angeles, the Clippers will have to find a way to score more points in Memphis. Tonight, in this critical Game 6, the Clippers will have to score a minimum of 90 points to give themselves any chance at extending this series. And to be honest, a 90-point effort by Los Angeles probably won’t be enough to stave off elimination.

The Grizzlies have scored 91 points or more in each of the first five games of this series and have eclipsed the century mark in the last two. However, defense has been Memphis’ calling card all season long. And if the Grizzlies are to advance to the second round, it will be that defense that will carry them home.

The Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers will resume their best-of-seven series tonight in Los Angeles. Both teams have protected their home court and the series is tied at two games apiece. This pivotal Game 5 is the NBA Playoff Game of the Day and the winner of tonight’s matchup will be just one win away from advancing to the second round.

Game 5 will be Memphis’ last chance to snatch home-court advantage from the Clippers. If the Grizzlies get a victory in Los Angeles tonight, they will have an opportunity to close out the series when it shifts to Memphis for Game 6 on Friday, May 3. In Games 3 and 4, the Grizzlies held the Clippers to just 82 and 83 points, respectively. If Memphis wants to head home with a 3-2 series lead and an opportunity to close it out in front of their fans on Friday night, the Grizzlies will have to exhibit the same defensive energy and intensity that they displayed in the FedExForum in the Staples Center tonight.

As Clippers point guard Chris Paul has said, this is now “a three-game series.” Luckily for the Clippers, two of the three games (if all three are played) will be played in the friendly confines of the Staples Center. However, Los Angeles has to protect its floor and earn its third straight home win over the Grizzlies if the Clippers want to go to bed tonight with home-court advantage still on their sides.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Indiana Pacers at Atlanta Hawks

After getting manhandled in the first two games of their best-of-seven series with the Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks hope that a change of venue will help them earn their first playoff victory of this postseason. The Hawks, who trail the Pacers 2-0 in their first-round series, have lost the first two games by an average of 16 points. Atlanta needs to win today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day to avoid falling into 3-0 hole.

Luckily, for the Hawks, they have experienced some success against the Pacers in Atlanta’s Philips Arena. Atlanta has won 11 consecutive home games against Indiana. The Hawks can keep their hopes in this series alive by extending that streak to an even dozen games. Atlanta has taken an early lead in each of the first two games only to give them up for good by the two-minute mark of the first quarter. The Hawks hope that a little home cooking will give them the energy to have a lead at the end—as opposed to the beginning—of the game.

Indiana, who has not won in Atlanta since a 100-90 victory back on December 22, 2006, can take a stranglehold on this series with a victory tonight. After averaging a mundane 94.7 points per game during the regular season, the Pacers are averaging 110 points against the Hawks in this series. If Indiana, who is scoring an NBA-high 117.8 points per 100 possessions during the playoffs, can take that type of offensive efficiency on the road, the Pacers will find themselves with a 3-0 series lead by the end of the night.

One day after being named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, Marc Gasol and the Memphis Grizzlies will have to pick up their defensive intensity in Game 3 of their first-round series with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies lost the first two games in Los Angeles and have to win today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole.

Over their last 16 games with the Clippers, including the playoffs, the Grizzlies have done a decent job of holding Los Angeles to just 93.8 points per game. Over that same time span, and again with the playoffs included, the Clippers have averaged 99 points in 161 games.

Memphis has done a good job of holding the Clippers below their average. However, since the Grizzlies have had problems scoring the ball against the Clippers (just 90 points per game in the last 16 between these teams), they will have to do an even better job defensively. Memphis has lost 11 of its last 16 contests against the Clippers, including four of seven at home. All season long, Memphis’ calling card has been its defense and the Grizzlies will have to take their defense to another level if they want to get a much-needed Game 3 victory.

Including Game 7 of last season’s first-round matchup between these teams, the Clippers have won three straight at Memphis’ FedExForum. If Los Angeles extends that streak to four, the Clippers would take—what has proven to be an insurmountable—3-0 lead over the Grizzlies. No team in NBA history has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series.

To avoid falling into a 3-0 hole, which would probably be too deep for them to dig themselves out of, the Grizzlies must win tonight.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Chicago Bulls at Brooklyn Nets

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

8:00 PM Chicago Bulls Brooklyn Nets Nets

The regular season and the playoffs are totally different animals. Just ask the Chicago Bulls. During the regular season, Chicago held the Brooklyn Nets to just 87.5 points per game and won the season series three games to one. In Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, the Bulls gave up an uncharacteristic 106 to the Nets. This is my NBA Playoff Game of the Day because it will be interesting to see what kind of defensive intensity the Bulls will play with after their defensive no-show in Game 1.

The tough-minded defense that Chicago has become known for under the tutelage of Tom Thibodeau was nowhere to be found in Chicago’s Game 1 loss on Saturday night. The Nets took an 11-point lead after one and never looked back. Brooklyn extended its lead to 25 points, 60-35, by the half. By the time it was all over and done with, the Nets had shot 55.8 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent beyond the three-point arc. Brooklyn also had six players (Deron Williams-22, Brook Lopez-21, Joe Johnson-16, Gerald Wallace-14, C.J. Watson-14 and Andray Blatche-12) score in double figures.

The Nets appear to be finding their collective offensive groove. Through 10 games during the month of April, including Saturday night’s Game 1, Brooklyn has averaged 103.2 points per game and has missed the century mark just twice.

The Bulls will have to compete much harder on the defensive side of the ball if they want to slow Brooklyn down and give themselves a chance at stealing home-court advantage from the Nets in Game 2.
