Random NBA Fan’s Week 10 Prediction Results

Before the start of the season, I made predictions for all 1,230 games, and despite incorrectly predicting all of the games that involved the Milwaukee Bucks (4) (for the second consecutive week) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (3), my predictions for Week 10 were pretty solid.  I correctly predicted 31 of the 50 games that were played during the week (Monday, December 29 through Sunday, January 4) and correctly predicted each game for the Boston Celtics (3), Golden State Warriors (2), Los Angeles Clippers (3), Memphis Grizzlies (3), Oklahoma City Thunder (3), Philadelphia 76ers (3), San Antonio Spurs (3) and Washington Wizards (4).

Random NBA Fan’s Week 6 Prediction Results

Before the start of the season, I made predictions for all 1,230 games.  December has started out like a mixed bag.  For Week 6 (Monday, December 1 through Sunday, December 7) of the season, I correctly predicted 31 of 52 games.  But despite getting nearly 60% (.596) of my predictions correct, I failed to correctly predict one single game for either the Chicago Bulls or the Toronto Raptors (I was 0-3 for both teams).  However, I did correctly predict the results of every game played by five teams during Week 6—the Indiana Pacers (3), Los Angeles Clippers (3), Memphis Grizzlies (3), New York Knicks (4) and Portland Trail Blazers (3).

Random NBA Fan’s Week 2 Prediction Results

Prior to the start of the 2014-2015 NBA season, I made predictions for all 1,230 games to determine my predicted order of finish for the Eastern and Western Conferences.  For Week 1, I correctly predicted 30 of the 42 games that were played.  Although I correctly predicted each game for the Los Angeles Clippers (3), Minnesota Timberwolves (3) and New York Knicks (4) during Week 2 (Monday, November 3 through Sunday, November 9), my predictions for the second week were not quite as strong as those for the first week.  For Week 2, I correctly predicted 34 of the 55 games played.

2014-2015 NBA Western Conference Preview

Based on my predictions for all 1,230 regular-season games for the 2014-2015 NBA season, here is my predicted order of finish for the Western Conference:

1. San Antonio Spurs (62-20)

With a refreshed Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker (neither played for their national teams this summer), the Spurs have a legitimate chance to win 60 games in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder (58-24)

Kevin Durant held down the fort early last season while his All-Star teammate, Russell Westbrook, recovered from a knee injury.  Can Westbrook and the rest of the Thunder return the favor this season as Durant recovers from a foot injury.

3. Los Angeles Clippers (56-26) 4th tiebreaker, predicted to go 34-18 in Conference

Los Angeles has improved its win total in each of the past five seasons which culminated in a franchise high 57 wins last season.  Even if the Clippers cannot improve its win total a sixth straight time, a third consecutive 50-win season is clearly in the cards.

4. Memphis Grizzlies (56-26) 4th tiebreaker, predicted to go 32-20 in Conference

The Grizzlies, who got 50 wins in Dave Joerger’s first season as an NBA head coach despite Marc Gasol missing 23 games last season, should improve on that number with a healthy Gasol, a newly acquired Vince Carter and a full year under Joerger’s system.

5. Portland Trail Blazers (54-28)

Damian Lillard has played all 82 games in each of his first two seasons.  Even if he cannot extend that streak to a third straight season, the stability that veterans like Steve Blake and Chris Kaman will bring to Portland’s second unit will keep the Trail Blazers relevant in the Western Conference this season.

6. Houston Rockets (53-29)

No they didn’t sign Chris Bosh and yes they lost some depth when they traded away Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, but the Rockets still have an All-Star duo in James Harden and Dwight Howard and Trevor Ariza fits nicely into the space departed by Chandler Parsons.

7. Golden State Warriors (51-31)

The firing of Mark Jackson and the hiring of Steve Kerr leaves the Warriors in the same relative position in the West—a playoff team in the bottom half of the bracket that will need a favorable matchup to get past the first round.

8. Dallas Mavericks (47-35) 5th tiebreaker, predicted to go 14-17 against predicted playoff teams in West—includes four games against the Los Angeles Lakers

Although they have reacquired Tyson Chandler, whose mere presence should improve their defense, the Mavericks gave up a reliable point guard in Jose Calderon.  With Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton manning the point, it is unlikely that Dallas’ offense will be as efficient as it was last season and if Chandler, who has missed 43 games in the past two seasons, misses any significant time the Mavericks’ defense will struggle as well.

9. Los Angeles Lakers (47-35) 5th tiebreaker, predicted to go 12-17 against predicted playoff teams in West—includes four games against the Dallas Mavericks

10. Denver Nuggets (44-38)

11. Phoenix Suns (39-43)

12. New Orleans Pelicans (32-50)

13. Minnesota Timberwolves (31-51)

14. Sacramento Kings (28-54)

15. Utah Jazz (20-62)

Things to Watch For

Which Indiana Pacers team will show up tonight? Just when Roy Hibbert and the Pacers got us to start believing that they might have their mojo back, they had what can arguably be called their worst performance of the season in Tuesday night’s Game 5. With an opportunity to win four consecutive postseason games for the first time since the opening round of the 2012 playoffs, Hibbert and the Pacers put up a resounding dud against the Wizards Tuesday night. After a solid 17-point, nine-rebound performance in Game 4, Hibbert finished Game 5 with just four points and two rebounds as Indiana got totally pummeled on the boards, 62-23, en route to a 102-79 thrashing on their home floor. Now the series shifts to Washington, where the Wizards are just 1-3 this postseason, including consecutive losses to the Pacers in Games 3 and 4 of this series.

How will Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers respond after blowing a seven-point lead in the final 49 seconds of Game 5? Paul and the Clippers were less than a minute away from taking a 3-2 series lead and stealing home-court advantage away from the Thunder before a series of mistakes left the door open for Oklahoma City. Now Los Angeles finds itself down 3-2 and, instead of having an opportunity to close out the series at home tonight, the Clippers find themselves trying to force a series-deciding Game 7 back in Oklahoma City on Sunday. Look for Paul and the Clippers to bring everything they have to tonight’s matchup and to leave all that they’ve got on the Staples Center floor tonight. Whether that will be enough to keep the Thunder from advancing to the Western Conference finals for the third time in four seasons remains to be seen.
