Before the 2013 NBA Playoffs began, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks predicted that his team would defeat the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat in six games. He also stated that there would be more pressure on the Heat than there would be on the Bucks. Now, with Miami leading the series 3-0, all of the pressure is on Milwaukee. Today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day is simply a win-or-go-home scenario for the Bucks.

Milwaukee has lost the first three games of the series by an average of 16 points and all three of them were double-digit losses. Although five Bucks are averaging double-figure scoring for the series (with Jennings scoring a team-high 16.7 points per game), Milwaukee has not gotten consistent production from any of its players. No Bucks player has scored 10 or more points in all three games.

The Heat will have an opportunity to sweep a playoff opponent for the first time since Chris Bosh and LeBron James joined Dwyane Wade in Miami two seasons ago. Miami held 3-0 leads in the first round of the playoffs each of the past two seasons and lost Game 4 each time. Wade, who will be a game-time decision, may or may not be in the lineup when the Heat go for their first four-game playoff sweep since sweeping the Washington Wizards in the second round of the 2005 playoffs.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies

One day after being named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, Marc Gasol and the Memphis Grizzlies will have to pick up their defensive intensity in Game 3 of their first-round series with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies lost the first two games in Los Angeles and have to win today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole.

Over their last 16 games with the Clippers, including the playoffs, the Grizzlies have done a decent job of holding Los Angeles to just 93.8 points per game. Over that same time span, and again with the playoffs included, the Clippers have averaged 99 points in 161 games.

Memphis has done a good job of holding the Clippers below their average. However, since the Grizzlies have had problems scoring the ball against the Clippers (just 90 points per game in the last 16 between these teams), they will have to do an even better job defensively. Memphis has lost 11 of its last 16 contests against the Clippers, including four of seven at home. All season long, Memphis’ calling card has been its defense and the Grizzlies will have to take their defense to another level if they want to get a much-needed Game 3 victory.

Including Game 7 of last season’s first-round matchup between these teams, the Clippers have won three straight at Memphis’ FedExForum. If Los Angeles extends that streak to four, the Clippers would take—what has proven to be an insurmountable—3-0 lead over the Grizzlies. No team in NBA history has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series.

To avoid falling into a 3-0 hole, which would probably be too deep for them to dig themselves out of, the Grizzlies must win tonight.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Golden State Warriors at Denver Nuggets

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

8:00 PM Boston Celtics New York Knicks Knicks
10:30 PM Golden State Warriors Denver Nuggets Nuggets

It will be interesting to see how the Golden State Nuggets adjust to the loss of power forward David Lee in Game 2 of their first-round series with the Denver Nuggets. Will Coach Mark Jackson try to get more out of center Andrew Bogut, who was a team-high plus-10 when he was on the floor in Saturday night’s Game 1? Or will the backcourt trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack be asked to carry even more of the load? Maybe Jackson will take a look at veteran forwards Andris Biedrins and Richard Jefferson (who both recorded DNPs in Game 1) to see if either of them can possibly make an impact on Game 2. Who knows what Jackson may do and, honestly, it will likely depend on the flow of the game. The Warriors will most likely start Carl Landry in Lee’s place and Landry will probably log more than 30 minutes in today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day.

Lee, who tore his right hip flexor in the fourth quarter of Game 1, will miss the rest of the playoffs. During the regular season, Golden State was 1-2 in the three games that Lee missed. Landry started in two of those games (a road win over the New Orleans Hornets and a home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks) and recorded a double-double in both.

Just as the Warriors lose their starting power forward for the year, Denver’s energetic Kenneth Faried is due to return to the Nuggets’ lineup after sitting out Game 1 with a sprained left ankle. Even without Faried’s energy, the Nuggets, who have lost just three games at the Pepsi Center all season long, still found a way to protect their home court in Game 1. Andre Miller, who scored a game-high 28 points, hit the first game-winning shot of his basketball career with 1.3 seconds remaining on the clock to give Denver a narrow 97-95 victory in Game 1. The Nuggets, who extended their home winning streak to 24 games with that victory, will try to continue their home dominance and take a 2-0 lead before the series shifts to Golden State.

2013 NBA Playoffs Game of the Day: Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Time (ET) Visitor Home Prediction
1:00 PM Atlanta Hawks Indiana Pacers Pacers
3:30 PM Los Angeles Lakers San Antonio Spurs Spurs
7:00 PM Milwaukee Bucks Miami Heat Heat
9:30 PM Houston Rockets Oklahoma City Thunder Thunder

Today’s NBA Playoff Game of the Day is an intriguing matchup between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder. Just one season after helping the Thunder reach the 2012 NBA Finals, James Harden will lead the Rockets (who are in the postseason for the first time since 2009) into Oklahoma City for a first-round matchup with the Thunder. Houston and Oklahoma City were two of the league’s top three scoring teams during the regular season. The Rockets averaged 106 points per game for second and the Thunder were right behind them at 105.7.

Oklahoma City, who won two of the three regular-season meetings between these two high-scoring teams, averaged 121 points per game against the Rockets and held Houston under 100 points twice. In Houston’s lone win in the series, Harden scored a career-high 46 points on an incredibly efficient 14 of 19 from the field, seven of eight from the three-point arc and 11 of 12 from the free-throw line to lead the Rockets to a scant 122-119 victory in Houston on February 20.

In order for the Rockets, who have lost five of their last six visits to Oklahoma City, to steal home-court advantage from the Thunder, they will have to find a way to hold Oklahoma City under 100 points. Either that, or Harden (and probably another Rocket—Jeremy Lin maybe) will need to put up super-efficient numbers on the scale of that February 20 meeting.

The Los Angeles Lakers will have an opportunity to fulfill Kobe Bryant’s promise of a playoff appearance when they host the Houston Rockets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. It is fitting that this game, which will ultimately determine the eighth—and final—seed of the Western Conference playoffs, is the game that will likely close the 2012-2013 season. This will be the fourth and final meeting of the season between the Lakers and the Rockets. The home team won each of the first three meetings. Houston leads the season series 2-1 and can win the season series over the Lakers for the second straight year with a victory tonight.

The Lakers (44-37) currently sit in eighth-place in the West, one game behind the Rockets (45-36), and control their own playoff destiny. Simply, if Los Angeles wins, the Lakers are in the playoffs. And since Los Angeles would own the tiebreaker over Houston (record against Western Conference opponents) in that scenario, the Lakers would earn the seventh seed and would open the postseason against the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs this weekend. Really simple isn’t it; win and you’re in.

However, if the Lakers fall to the Rockets, Los Angeles could be in our out depending on what happens in the Utah Jazz-Memphis Grizzlies matchup, which would likely be over before the Rockets-Lakers matchup tips off. If Utah defeats Memphis, the Lakers would have to beat Houston to make it to the postseason.

If the Jazz win and the Lakers lose, Utah and Los Angeles would end the season with identical 44-38 records. Since Utah won the season series 2-1, the Jazz would leapfrog the Lakers and take over the eighth seed and Los Angeles would fall to ninth and miss the playoffs altogether. However, if the Jazz fall to the Grizzlies, the Lakers will definitely make the postseason and will be either the seventh (if they defeat the Rockets) or eighth (if they lose to the Rockets) seed in the 2013 Western Conference Playoffs.

Basically, if the Lakers win, they will earn the seventh seed and open the postseason against the San Antonio Spurs. If they lose they would either hold onto eighth place—and face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round—or fall out of the playoffs altogether.

Houston’s playoff scenarios, though they do not risk falling out altogether, are even more complicated than the Lakers’. The Rockets, who trail the sixth-place Golden State Warriors by a single game, can move up to the sixth seed if they defeat the Lakers and the Warriors drop a road game to the Portland Trail Blazers. In that scenario Houston and Golden State would both finish the season at 46-36, and since the Rockets won the season series between the two teams three games to one, Houston would move ahead of the Warriors to claim the sixth seed and would face either the Denver Nuggets or Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs.

If both Houston and Golden State win, the Rockets would maintain seventh-place and would open the playoffs in San Antonio against the Spurs. If the Rockets fall to the Lakers, Houston would drop to eighth and James Harden and the Rockets would open the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder this weekend.

Basically, if the Rockets lose, they will fall down to eighth and Harden will open the 2013 NBA playoffs against the team that he helped reach the 2012 NBA Finals. If they win they would either hold onto seventh place—and face the San Antonio Spurs in the first round—or possibly move up to the sixth seed where they would open the playoffs against either the Denver Nuggets or the Los Angeles Clippers.

This game will ultimately determine whether it will be the Jazz, Lakers or Rockets that will face the defending Western Conference Champion Oklahoma City Thunder when the 2013 Western Conference Playoffs begin this weekend.
