NBA fans, the final day of this 66-game, lockout-shortened season is here and there are 13 games on the slate. Today’s NBA Game of the Day is the first and only contest of the season between the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks—two teams that still have something to play for.

Dallas currently sits in the seventh spot in the Western Conference, one game behind the sixth-place Denver Nuggets. Since the Mavericks own the tiebreaker, they can move into the sixth spot with a win tonight and a Nuggets loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Hawks are locked in the fifth spot and will face the fourth-seeded Boston Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Whether that series will begin in Atlanta or Boston will be determined by the results of tonight’s games. If the Hawks defeat the Mavericks, Atlanta will earn home-court advantage against Boston no matter what the Celtics do tonight. However, if Atlanta loses and Boston gets a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, the Celtics and Hawks will finish the season with identical 39-27 records. In that case, since the Celtics won the head-to-head matchups 2-1, the series would open in Boston by virtue of the tiebreaker.

The Philadelphia 76ers will have an opportunity to clinch the final Eastern Conference playoff berth when they visit the New Jersey Nets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these two teams. The Nets lead the season series 2-1.

If Philadelphia wins tonight and ties the series 2-2, the 76ers will also earn their second straight trip to the postseason. Even if they lose, the 76ers can still clinch a playoff spot with a Milwaukee Bucks loss to the Toronto Raptors.

The Nets, who will move to Brooklyn next season, will be playing their final home game in New Jersey before concluding their season with a visit to Toronto on Thursday, April 26. If they can win their home finale, the Nets’ 35-year run of futility and misfortune in New Jersey will end on a somewhat unfamiliar note.

NBA Game of the Day: Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns

Today’s Games (All times are Eastern):

Saturday, Apr. 21 Visitor Home Prediction
5:30 PM Denver Nuggets Phoenix Suns Nuggets

8:00 PM Portland Trail Blazers Memphis Grizzlies Trail Blazers
8:30 PM New Jersey Nets Milwaukee Bucks Bucks
10:30 PM Orlando Magic Utah Jazz Magic

With just a game and a half separating them, the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns will continue their fight for the last two spots in the Western Conference playoffs in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This is the third of three regular season meetings between these teams. Denver won the first two games and already own the tiebreaker should the Nuggets and Suns finish the season with the same record.

For the seventh-place Nuggets, who lead the Suns and Utah Jazz (who are tied for eighth and ninth) by a game and a half in the Western Conference standings, today is really simple: Win and you secure a playoff berth.

For Phoenix things are not as cut and dry. A Suns win would not guarantee Steve Nash and company a trip to the playoffs, but it would help them maintain the eighth spot (Phoenix owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with Utah) and get them one step closer to a trip to the postseason. A loss would not mathematically eliminate Phoenix from the playoff race. But a Suns loss coupled with a Jazz win (versus the Dwight Howard-less Orlando Magic) would drop Phoenix down to ninth place, a full game behind Utah, with just two games remaining to make up the deficit.

NBA fans, 28 of the league’s 30 teams are in action today. Today’s NBA Game of the Day between the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic is a potential preview of an Eastern Conference first-round series. This will be the third and final regular-season meeting between these two teams. The Celtics lead the season series 2-0.

Boston, by virtue of leading the Atlantic Division, currently sits in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Although the Celtics have one of the top four seeds, they do not have one of the four-best records in the East (both the Magic and Atlanta Hawks, who are tied for fifth and sixth have better records). If Boston finishes the season with a worse record than either Atlanta or Orlando, the Celtics will open the playoffs on the road for the first time since 2007, when they missed the postseason altogether.

The Magic can increase their half-game lead over the Celtics to one and a half games with a victory in tonight’s game.

The Houston Rockets will host the Denver Nuggets in today’s NBA Game of the Day.  This will be the fourth and final meeting between these teams this season.  Last night, the Nuggets won the first game of this home-and-home 101-86 and moved a game ahead of the eighth-place Rockets in the Western Conference standings.

To make sure that they remain within the top eight in the West, the Rockets need to win tonight’s game.  A Houston loss coupled with a Phoenix Suns victory over the Portland Trail Blazers would drop the Rockets down to ninth place.  Although Houston and Phoenix would have identical 32-29 records, the Suns would be the eighth-place team because they own the head-to-head tiebreaker (better conference record).

With a win, Denver would move two games ahead of Houston in the standings and clinch the tiebreaker should the Nuggets and Rockets finish the season with the same record.  A Nuggets win would also keep Denver within striking distance of the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
