Random NBA Fan’s Week 7 Prediction Results

Before the start of the season, I made predictions for all 1,230 games. Despite correctly predicting each game for the Los Angeles Lakers (3), Memphis Grizzlies (3) and Milwaukee Bucks (2), Week 7 (Monday, December 8 through Sunday, December 14) was a pretty bad week for me.  I failed to correctly predict any games for five different teams—the Atlanta Hawks (4), Brooklyn Nets (4), Houston Rockets (3), New York Knicks (4) and Orlando Magic (3)—which led to my first sub-.500 (23-31) week of the season.

NBA Game of the Day: Dallas Mavericks at Memphis Grizzlies

The seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs will be up for grabs when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Memphis Grizzlies in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between these Southwest Division rivals. Dallas won each of the first three games by double digits and can sweep the season series over the Grizzlies for the first time since winning all four meetings during the 2007-2008 season.

The Mavericks and Grizzlies come into the final night of the regular season with identical 49-32 records. Both teams will be seeking win 50 and both of them will be trying to avoid a first-round matchup with the overall top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. Dallas and Memphis were both swept by the Spurs and both would rather take their chances with the West’s second seed (which will be either the Los Angeles Clippers or Oklahoma City Thunder) than face San Antonio in the first round.

The winner of tonight’s matchup will have a 50-win season and avoid opening the playoffs in San Antonio. The loser will fall just short of the 50-win plateau and have to open the playoffs against a Spurs team that can finish the regular season with a single-season-franchise-tying 63 wins with a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

NBA Game of the Day: Memphis Grizzlies at Phoenix Suns

The Memphis Grizzlies (48-32) will try to clinch the lone remaining playoff spot when they visit the Phoenix Suns (47-33) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting of the season for these two playoff hopefuls. The Grizzlies won the first three meetings and can sweep the season series over Phoenix for the first time in franchise history with a victory tonight.

Memphis, who has a one-game advantage over the Suns for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference playoffs, can extend that lead to an insurmountable two games—with just one game remaining—with a victory tonight. For the Grizzlies it is really simple: Win and their in.

A win will not only punch Memphis’ postseason ticket, but a win will keep the Grizzlies’ hopes of moving up the Western Conference standings alive. If Memphis closes the season out with two wins, the Grizzlies could possibly move as high as sixth.

While Memphis will be trying to secure its spot in the playoffs and possibly improve its seeding, the Suns will be trying to keep their postseason hopes alive. Phoenix has to figure out a way to solve its Grizzlies problem tonight to make Wednesday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings meaningful.

With a victory over Memphis, the Suns can move into a dead heat with the Grizzlies.  However, even with a win tonight the Suns would still be on the outside looking in since Memphis owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.  But a win tonight is the only thing that can keep Phoenix’s playoff hopes alive.

If Phoenix wins tonight, the Suns would remain in the playoff hunt and the final playoff spot in the ultra-competitive Western Conference would remain open until the final night of the season.

The Oklahoma City Thunder (58-21) will try to clinch the Western Conference’s number two seed when they visit the Indiana Pacers (54-26) in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the second and final regular-season meeting between these two NBA finalist hopefuls. The Thunder handed the Pacers a 24-point loss, 118-94, back on December 8. With a victory this afternoon, Oklahoma City would win the season series over Indiana for the third time in four years.

The Thunder, who have the NBA’s second-best record (behind the San Antonio Spurs), can clinch second-place in the West as well as the overall number two seed with a victory over the Pacers. Oklahoma City has a two-and-a-half game lead over the third-place Los Angeles Clippers, who are currently 56-24. With a win today, that lead would grow to an insurmountable three games.

However, if the Thunder were to lose today’s contest as well as their final two games against the New Orleans Pelicans and Detroit Pistons, the Clippers would be able to tie Oklahoma City by winning their two remaining games against the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers. In the event that the Thunder and Clippers finish the season with identical 58-24 records, the tie would be broken by conference record since the season series between the teams is tied at two games apiece. In the aforementioned scenario, Los Angeles would finish the season 37-15 against the West compared to 36-16 for Oklahoma City.

A Thunder loss this afternoon would still leave the Clippers a slight opening to come in and snatch second place from Oklahoma City.

Indiana is in a dead heat with the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat for the top spot in the East, but the Pacers currently sit atop the East by virtue of having the superior conference record. Indiana, who has lost three straight games to Oklahoma City by an average of 19, will have to put an end to that streak if it wants to remain atop the East.

The Pacers hold the tiebreaker over Miami and can maintain the top spot in the East by simply winning games. If Indiana wins this afternoon, the Pacers would take sole possession of first place in the East and move half a game ahead of the Heat. But if the Pacers lose, they would fall a half-game behind Miami, and more importantly, they would trail the Heat by one game in the loss column.
