The fourth-place teams in each conference will face off when the Memphis Grizzlies visit the Brooklyn Nets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the second and final meeting between these teams this season. The Grizzlies won the first matchup, 101-77, at the FedExForum in Memphis on January 25.

The Grizzlies have not skipped a beat since trading away their leading scorer, Rudy Gay, at the end of January. Memphis (36-18) has won seven of 10 contests since the trade and is currently on a six-game winning streak.

After dropping the first game to the Houston Rockets on Friday night, Brooklyn will try to salvage this brief two-game homestand with a victory over the Grizzlies. The Nets, who are 8-12 against the West, are winless against the Southwest Division this season. Their last victory against a Southwest opponent came back on February 28, 2012, when they eked out a one-point win over the Dallas Mavericks.

NBA Game of the Day: Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder

One day after trading their leading scorer, the Memphis Grizzlies will face the Northwest Division-leading, 34-win Oklahoma City Thunder in today’s NBA Game of the Day. On Wednesday evening, the Grizzlies shipped Rudy Gay and seldom used reserve center Hamed Haddadi to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jose Calderon, Ed Davis and a second-round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Memphis then sent Calderon to the Detroit Pistons for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.

Gay, who at 17.2 points per game was leading Memphis in scoring this season, led the Grizzlies (including the first half of this season) in scoring in four of his seven seasons with the team. In his last game with the Grizzlies, Gay made the go-ahead bucket with 13.3 seconds remaining in the game and scored 26 points to help Memphis (29-15) to a 103-100 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers Monday night.

In their first game without Gay, the Grizzlies will face a Thunder team that is 19-3 on its home floor. However, one of Oklahoma City’s three home losses came against Memphis back on November 14. Gay scored a team-high 28 points for the Grizzlies in that matchup. Without Gay in the lineup, the Grizzlies pushed the Thunder to seven games in the second round of the 2011 Western Conference Playoffs.

Thunder center Kendrick Perkins doesn’t think too highly of the Grizzlies’ decision to move Gay. After the trade Perkins tweeted “Wow that was 1 crazy trade today. Are you serious Rudy Gay is right there under KD, Lebron, Kobe, and Melo. #badtrade.”

It remains to be seen whether this was a bad trade for the Grizzlies. But after trading their leading scorer, Memphis is bound to go through an adjustment period. And if that adjustment period causes the Grizzlies, who are currently fourth in the Western Conference, to drop down to the sixth, seventh or even eighth seed, Memphis just might have a difficult time of reaching this season’s goal of winning a playoff series for the second time in franchise history.

NBA fans, today there are 12 games on the NBA schedule. The game of the day is a compelling matchup between the young, up-and-coming Memphis Grizzlies and the aging San Antonio Spurs.

In last season’s playoffs, Memphis became just the second number eight seed to defeat a number one seed in a seven-game series when they defeated the 61-win Spurs 4-2 in their first-round series. That series victory, along with the return of forward Rudy Gay, has the Grizzlies and their fans looking forward to big things this season.

Well Memphis’ season begins today with a big Southwest Division matchup against the Spurs.
