The Los Angeles Lakers will have an opportunity to fulfill Kobe Bryant’s promise of a playoff appearance when they host the Houston Rockets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. It is fitting that this game, which will ultimately determine the eighth—and final—seed of the Western Conference playoffs, is the game that will likely close the 2012-2013 season. This will be the fourth and final meeting of the season between the Lakers and the Rockets. The home team won each of the first three meetings. Houston leads the season series 2-1 and can win the season series over the Lakers for the second straight year with a victory tonight.

The Lakers (44-37) currently sit in eighth-place in the West, one game behind the Rockets (45-36), and control their own playoff destiny. Simply, if Los Angeles wins, the Lakers are in the playoffs. And since Los Angeles would own the tiebreaker over Houston (record against Western Conference opponents) in that scenario, the Lakers would earn the seventh seed and would open the postseason against the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs this weekend. Really simple isn’t it; win and you’re in.

However, if the Lakers fall to the Rockets, Los Angeles could be in our out depending on what happens in the Utah Jazz-Memphis Grizzlies matchup, which would likely be over before the Rockets-Lakers matchup tips off. If Utah defeats Memphis, the Lakers would have to beat Houston to make it to the postseason.

If the Jazz win and the Lakers lose, Utah and Los Angeles would end the season with identical 44-38 records. Since Utah won the season series 2-1, the Jazz would leapfrog the Lakers and take over the eighth seed and Los Angeles would fall to ninth and miss the playoffs altogether. However, if the Jazz fall to the Grizzlies, the Lakers will definitely make the postseason and will be either the seventh (if they defeat the Rockets) or eighth (if they lose to the Rockets) seed in the 2013 Western Conference Playoffs.

Basically, if the Lakers win, they will earn the seventh seed and open the postseason against the San Antonio Spurs. If they lose they would either hold onto eighth place—and face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round—or fall out of the playoffs altogether.

Houston’s playoff scenarios, though they do not risk falling out altogether, are even more complicated than the Lakers’. The Rockets, who trail the sixth-place Golden State Warriors by a single game, can move up to the sixth seed if they defeat the Lakers and the Warriors drop a road game to the Portland Trail Blazers. In that scenario Houston and Golden State would both finish the season at 46-36, and since the Rockets won the season series between the two teams three games to one, Houston would move ahead of the Warriors to claim the sixth seed and would face either the Denver Nuggets or Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs.

If both Houston and Golden State win, the Rockets would maintain seventh-place and would open the playoffs in San Antonio against the Spurs. If the Rockets fall to the Lakers, Houston would drop to eighth and James Harden and the Rockets would open the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder this weekend.

Basically, if the Rockets lose, they will fall down to eighth and Harden will open the 2013 NBA playoffs against the team that he helped reach the 2012 NBA Finals. If they win they would either hold onto seventh place—and face the San Antonio Spurs in the first round—or possibly move up to the sixth seed where they would open the playoffs against either the Denver Nuggets or the Los Angeles Clippers.

This game will ultimately determine whether it will be the Jazz, Lakers or Rockets that will face the defending Western Conference Champion Oklahoma City Thunder when the 2013 Western Conference Playoffs begin this weekend.

NBA Game of the Day: Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

The Utah Jazz will try to keep their playoff hopes alive when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Jazz and Timberwolves this season. Utah leads the season series 3-0 and can sweep the season series with Minnesota for the first time since Hall of Famers Karl Malone and John Stockton led the Jazz to three victories over the Timberwolves during the lockout-shortened 1998-1999 season.

Utah (42-38) trails the Los Angeles Lakers by a game and a half for the eighth—and final—Western Conference playoff spot. The Jazz, who have won four straight games against Minnesota can move within a game of the Lakers and extend their playoff chase to the final night of the season with a victory over the Timberwolves tonight. A loss would end Utah’s playoff hopes and make Wednesday night’s matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies a meaningless pursuit for the Jazz.

The Timberwolves, who will be playing their home finale, have won four of their last six contests at the Target Center, including an impressive eight-point victory over the West’s top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder on March 29. If Minnesota (30-50) can win its home finale, the Timberwolves would not only avoid being swept by the Jazz for the first time in 14 seasons, but they would also be the ultimate spoilers to Utah’s playoff hopes.

NBA Game of the Day: Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks

The New York Knicks will try to clinch the Eastern Conference’s second seed when they host the Indiana Pacers in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final regular-season meeting between these two division winners. The home team has won each of the previous three meetings and the Pacers lead the season series 2-1. Indiana can win the season series for the first time in five years with a victory this afternoon.

The Atlantic Division champion Knicks (52-27) sit in second place in the East, three games ahead of the third-place Pacers. The Knicks, who have battled with Indiana for the second-best record in the East for much of the season (particularly after the All-Star break), has won eight straight at home and 14 of 15 overall to create some space between themselves and the Pacers. New York can lock up the East’s second spot with a victory over Indiana this afternoon. In fact, with just three games remaining in the season, the second seed in the East is New York’s to lose. With just one more win—or a Pacers loss—the Knicks will earn the second seed and home-court advantage over Indiana in a possible second-round matchup between the teams.

The Pacers, who have lost three of their last five, can keep their fleeting hopes of overtaking the Knicks for second place in the East alive with a win today. Indiana (49-30) would win the season series and earn the tiebreaker over New York should the two teams finish the season with identical 52-30 records with a win today. However, considering that the red-hot Knicks would have to lose its three remaining games (including today’s contest against the Pacers) and Indiana would have to win its three remaining games (including today’s matchup in New York), the chances of the tiebreaker coming into play are slim and none.

The Memphis Grizzlies will continue their push to earn home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason when they visit the Houston Rockets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final regular-season meeting between the Grizzlies and Rockets. Memphis leads the season series 2-1 and can win a season series over Houston for the first time since winning all four matchups between the teams during the 2005-2006 season.

The Grizzlies (53-25) currently sit in fifth-place behind the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers (Pacific Division winners) in the Western Conference standings. However, if the playoffs were to begin today, Memphis would have home-court advantage over Los Angeles due to having a better record than the fourth-place Clippers.

Depending upon what happens in tonight’s games, that picture may very well be different tomorrow morning. If the Grizzlies, who have not won in Houston since a 93-81 victory back on April 15, 2006, lose to the Rockets and the Clippers get a road win over the New Orleans Hornets tonight, Memphis and Los Angeles would wake up tomorrow with identical 53-26 records, and in that scenario, the Clippers, as division winners, would have home-court advantage over the Grizzlies.

If Memphis wants to ensure that it will still have a better record than Los Angeles by the end of the night, the Grizzlies must find a way to snap their 13-game road losing streak to the Rockets. A win would also keep Memphis’ hopes of moving up to third in the West alive.

Houston, who sits in seventh place in the West, is just half a game behind the sixth-place Golden State Warriors. The Rockets (44-34) have an opportunity to overtake the Warriors and move up the standings with a win tonight. If Houston extends their home winning streak over the Grizzlies to 14 and the Warriors fall to the Los Angeles Lakers (who are literally playing for their playoff lives) tonight, the Rockets will move into sixth place in the West, a half-game ahead of the Warriors.

In fact, since the Rockets and Warriors are tied in the loss column and Houston has already won the season series between the teams 3-1, the Rockets can earn the sixth spot in the Western Conference playoff standings by simply winning out. If both Golden State and Houston win their remaining games they will finish the season with identical 48-34 records and the Rockets, who hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, would earn the sixth seed.

NBA Game of the Day: San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets

The San Antonio Spurs will try to hold on to the Western Conference’s top playoff seed when they visit the Denver Nuggets in today’s NBA Game of the Day. This will be the fourth and final meeting of the season between these two teams. San Antonio leads the season series 2-1 (each team has won the games played on its home floor) and can clinch the season series for the third consecutive year with a victory tonight.

The Spurs (57-20) are only a half-game ahead of the second-place Oklahoma City Thunder and since the Thunder (who are idle tonight) hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, San Antonio needs to win tonight to remain atop the West. Since the Spurs are a game ahead of Oklahoma City in the loss column, San Antonio is in complete control of its seeding destiny. If the Spurs win out, San Antonio will open the postseason with the top seed in the West. However, if they drop one of their five remaining games, the Spurs will open the door for the Thunder to potentially leapfrog them and take over the West’s top spot.

Denver, who is an NBA-best 35-3 at home, will try to extend its home winning streak to a franchise-record-setting 21 games with a victory over San Antonio tonight. A win tonight would also move the Nuggets (53-24) one step closer to securing the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

The Nuggets are currently half a game ahead of the fifth-place Memphis Grizzlies and two games ahead of the fourth-place Los Angeles Clippers (the Clippers are guaranteed one of the top four seeds by virtue of winning the Pacific Division). Unless Denver somehow catches the Thunder for the Northwest Division title, the Nuggets would have to finish a full game ahead of the Clippers to secure the third seed (Los Angeles would win the head-to-head tiebreaker because it is a division winner). Therefore, Denver’s magic number (any combination of Nuggets wins and Clippers losses) to maintain third place over Los Angeles is four.

The Nuggets own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Memphis and their magic number to clinch third-place over the Grizzlies is four as well. With five games remaining on its schedule, Denver has complete control of its playoff seeding destiny and even has one game to spare.
